DeWalt DCD791D2 20V Max XR Li-Ion Brushless Compact Drill/Driver Kit For faster work on tougher jobs The DeWalt 20-volt handles demanding work better than the smaller, 12-volt drills, yet it retains the great ergonomics and other features that set DeWalt’s 12-volt apart.

Amazon $189* – $200 at Lowe’s

We recommend the DeWalt DCD791D2 Li-Ion brushless compact drill/driver kit if you are taking on large projects such as drilling a lot of holes or securing long screws. While this is a 20-volt drill it has all the same important features as the 12-volt DeWalt. This drill is faster than our 12-volt choice, and does the same job in half the time. It also lasts twice as long, with a longer battery. It can be used as a flashlight in any crawl space. The LED is also easily switched off by the drill. For around-the-house tasks, the added speed and power are often unnecessary. These are great for producing work like installing decking or building sheds.

Another powerful, larger option

The model is nearly identical to the DeWalt’s 20-volt version (with minor compromises), so it’s worth considering if it comes at a cheaper price or if your current Milwaukee cordless tools are used.

$199* on Home Depot

*The original price of the book was $200 at time it was published.

If the DeWalt 20-volt drill is not available, we also like the 18-volt Milwaukee 2801-22CT M18 1/2 in. Compact Brushless Drill/Driver Kit . This drill/driver kit is very similar in terms of power, ergonomics and design to the DeWalt DCD791D2. The differences are just marketing. The negatives: It has only a single-setting light that turns on and off with the drill, and the case has hardly any room for drill or driver bits. These are small issues but they don’t matter a lot. However, if Milwaukee has cordless tools already in your collection or if the price is lower than DeWalt’s, this drill should be considered.

A good middle ground

DeWalt’s small 20-volt Atomic has more power than its 12-volt counterpart, but less than the bigger 20-volt. It’s a good choice for a DIYer to buy into DeWalt’s expansive 20-volt line.

Brushed Or Brushless?

This does not include drills that use brushed motors. Braided motors have carbon brushes which contact the rotating part of the motor. This means that the brushes are subject to constant friction while the drill is being used and eventually will begin to wear. Brushless motors have a lower torque efficiency and a greater heat generation. Brushless motors work solely by using magnets. There are no friction-producing physical parts. This efficiency gain gets you better performance and drilling power over the course of a battery charge compared to the same drill in a brushed model.

You might have to spend more for a drill that has a brushless motor. One example is the Milwaukee Model 2606-22CT brushless motor, which I test cost $179. The brushless version, Model 2801-22CT, normally costs $20 more. This gap might be narrowed by holiday sales, or some 18-volt drills may even be cheaper than their 12-volt counterparts. So keep your eyes peeled for any good deals on power tools. On the next test, I’ll add brushless drills to this list.

However, there are rare occasions when some drills fail to deliver the functionality you expected. If you keep reading, these are the pitfalls to avoid and will help you find the cordless power tool that suits your needs best. To achieve my high performance expectations, I took 16 popular brushed cordless drilling machines and bore over 200 holes.

Cordless drills offer a safer alternative to standard, high-powered power tools. Because of the invention of the lithium battery, cordless drills today pack more power than ever. Li-ion batteries are not only lighter than the old nickel cadmium (Ni-Cd) packs – a great weight saving on the wrist and forearm – they also hold their charge longer when not in use. These battery types don’t mind being filled to the brim from half-empty.

Compare cordless drills and corded drilling to determine what job you have. Wear appropriate PPE while working with drills. You might also need an electric screwdriver to secure the screws after you’ve drilled the holes. Check out the T3 DIY hub for more information about proper tools and DIY.

How to Find The Perfect Cordless Drill

Voltage is a key factor. Simply stated, the bigger the battery voltage, you have more power to drill through difficult materials like steel, concrete, brick, etc.

Additionally, cordless drills are capable of both drilling and driving. Combi Drills have a slightly different design in that the drills also come with hammer actions for masonry and hard work. If you live in a flat with plasterboard walls, chances are you don’t need that additional power.

This roundup of drill drivers is able to tackle simple DIY tasks. But, as with all things in life, you don’t get what your pay for. Higher-end models have more power and are more durable.

No need to look further if your goal is to find the best cordless drilling tool for all things DIY.

Cordless Drills That Are Best For Woodworking and Construction

Do you need to drill holes? What about screws? These battery-powered drill/drivers are up to the job.

Even the most basic tool kit should include a cordless drill to help you do carpentry projects and repair things around the house (and maybe your car too). You can use the same tool to drive screws or drill holes. The tool is also compatible with other accessories, such as the pocket screw guide or doweling Jig. This makes it useful in building cabinets and furniture. The cordless drill has been a standout among all of the innovations made in workshop over the past 30 years. For most of us, the tool is indispensable.

American-made drill that delivers powerful hole-blasting power and outsize screw-driving performances SHOPNOW. SHOPNOW. The best cordless drill for construction, remodeling and demolition. There are a variety of cordless drills available. The higher-voltage options can run from 18 to 40%. They’re more difficult to operate and take longer to recharge, but more powerful at drilling large holes in wood or driving big screws. And that effectiveness becomes more apparent when you drill through thick sections of lumber or steel. Select a battery with more amp hours (Ah) for longer run time. Most batteries can run between 2 Ah and 6 Ah. Again, the tradeoff for more run time is weight. A full-size, heavier tool is preferred over a small and lighter subcompact version to complete heavy tasks. A subcompact drill is more nimble, however, than a full size tool. This makes it easier for smaller projects such as hanging windows, assembling furniture or shelf hardware. Using such a tool, you may find that you get done sooner.

Some cordless drilling machines come equipped with side handles that you can attach to and take out as required. Side handles are useful for long-term projects.

A drill that has a hammer feature is required if you intend to drill into brick, concrete, mortar, stones, or pavers. This is a mechanism that imparts a percussion action to the drill as the bit rotates, helping a carbide-tip masonry bit to chip away material as it turns.

Finally, look at the specs and package. Are the specs and package clear? Do they come without batteries and chargers or with one or more batteries, a charger and possibly a case? For a bit more money, some drills have a rapid charger that quickly replenishes the battery to partial charge in minutes. You can finish your project faster than usual by using this rapid charger. How we tested each tool. We made 25 holes in Douglas fir two-by eight (Grade: No. 2, and BETTER”) using a Speedbor spade, which is a one-inch wide. The classic design doesn’t require any lead screws. Next, we drove 25 lag screws. The screws were 1/4″ in diameter by 2 inches long. We then backed out each screw. We then went back to drilling holes using the spade bit, until the tool’s temperature overload prevented us drilling. After waiting for the battery to cool down, we kept drilling holes until it went dead. We drilled 1,510 holes, and drove 375lag screws during this test.

It’s obvious that this test is difficult. One-inch wide spade bits must travel through Douglas fir framing wood with great torque. The area at the bottom is where most friction happens. This test favours heavier-duty, more powerful tools, especially pro-grade ones. The test enabled us to determine which smaller tools and models for homeowners could put in surprising performances.

Harbor Freight’s Bauer drill is DIY-level and is stubbornly perseverant. You won’t be able to punch holes of 1 inch in diameter in a short time. This is a significant disadvantage compared with other tools. It was able to get through all the holes, and eventually managed to pair it with a 5-Ah lithium battery. As a screwdriver, it put in 25 lag screws without trouble and backed them out. When we adjusted the speed selector to two (the fastest speed), and the clutch ring at 21, it was able to achieve maximum driving torque without the clutch disengaging the motor or drivetrain. The speed control and clutch switches can be adjusted easily. To top it all, the Bauer comes with a ergonomically-designed grip and a bright working light.
